Can I request Internet number resources as an individual?
Whether you’re a sole proprietor, freelancer, or single-person business owner within ARIN’s region, we want you to understand your options for requesting Internet number resources (IP addresses and Autonomous System Numbers). Read on to learn how you may qualify as an individual business entity and the steps involved in ensuring your eligibility.
Eligible Business Structures
Individuals must be operating as a legally recognized business to qualify to request Internet number resources from ARIN. Common business structures accepted in the ARIN region include:
- Sole Proprietor/Sole Trader: Operating under your own name or a registered business name, such as “John Smith” or “Smith IT Services.”
- Registered Trade Name (DBA/FBN): Operating under a business name that’s different from your legal name, for example, “Smith IT Solutions.”
- Single-Member LLC or Sole-Shareholder Corporation: A legally registered company owned and operated by one person, such as “Smith Technologies LLC.”
- Independent Contractor/Freelancer: Providing services as a self-employed individual registered as a business.
- Professional Corporation (PC) or PLLC: Licensed professionals operating under a registered entity like “Smith Professional IT Services, PC.”
Documentation Requirements
When requesting Internet number resources, ARIN may require you to provide specific documentation to verify your eligibility, including:
- Business Registration or License: Proof of your business’s legal recognition.
- Tax Identification Number: Such as the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Business Number (BN) or Quebec Enterprise Number (NEQ).
- Jurisdiction-Specific Documentation: Other documents that may be specific to your country or local jurisdiction.
Ensuring Compliance and Responsibility
As a business owner, it’s your responsibility to comply with all relevant business and tax laws in your area. This includes:
- Registering your business name if required
- Obtaining necessary tax IDs
- Meeting all legal requirements in your region
Failure to comply could result in delays or denial of your resource requests.
Regional Considerations
The requirements for business registration can vary by country or jurisdiction. You should consult your local government or business registry for details, but here’s a breakdown of some examples in ARIN’s defined service area:
- Canada: A CRA BN is required if collecting GST/HST, hiring employees, or registering certain tax accounts.
- Caribbean: Local business registration or trade licenses may be necessary, along with potential tax registration.
- United States: State or local business registration may be needed for trade names, LLCs, or corporations.
