ACSP Suggestion 2011.28: Show Nameservers in Whois Output
Suggestion
Author: John Pennington
Submitted On: 22 July 2011
Description:
Is it possible to show nameservers associated with delegations like you used to
For blocks which we aren’t the POC, it is getting tiresome to have to do DNS lookups to see if your nameservers have entries pointing to us
I don’t see why nameserver information is no longer available in whois output

Thank you for your suggestion, however ARIN’s Whois server has never had the ability to list reverse delegations based on a hostname query. This is an interesting idea that has been mentioned before by forward DNS providers who wish to check to see if their nameservers are being used without permission.
During ARIN XXVIII in Philadelphia, there will be an ARIN Online Users Forum, during which this and several other ARIN Online-related suggestions will be discussed. We encourage you to participate by either attending or joining the discussion remotely. Discussing future enhancements with a larger audience will help us determine community needs and priorities.
Currently there are multiple ways to check what zones your host has delegated from us to you if you are seeing interesting output on your authoritative DNS servers. First is the method you are using via DNS. There are also methods are available via our services if you know the delegation:
- Query for the delegation via the whois port - (ie for 198.41.0.0/24 query for whois -h whois.arin.net “d 0.41.198.in-addr.arpa”)
- Query via rest: http://whois.arin.net/rest/rdns/0.41.198.in-addr.arpa?showDetails=true
- Query via the whois interface off the website http://whois.arin.net/ui/advanced.jsp - put 0.41.198.in-addr.arpa in the query interface and get the results
We thank you for participating in the ARIN Consultation and Suggestion Process. This suggestion is now closed.
