Join Us at ARIN 55 in Charlotte or Online
Our next Public Policy and Members Meeting is one month away, and we hope to see you there! ARIN 55 will take place 27-30 April at the Hilton Charlotte Uptown in Charlotte, North Carolina, for in-person attendees and online for virtual participants joining us via the Zoom webinar platform. Click here to register.
ARIN 55 will be a great opportunity to:
- Discuss draft Internet number resource policies.
- Participate in technical discussions.
- Hear reports from our Board and Advisory Council.
- Get updates from ARIN staff on topics including Internet governance, routing security, and departmental happenings.
- Network with colleagues.
Plus, Leslie Daigle of the Global Cyber Alliance will present the keynote address on strengthening Internet integrity with collaborative solutions for cybersecurity challenges. Don’t miss her discussion of why and how the Global Cyber Alliance Internet Integrity Program develops platforms to provide insight for analysis of Internet cybersecurity threats and threat actors and builds communities of Internet infrastructure operators to identify and implement solutions.
Those joining us in Charlotte are invited to catch up with friends and colleagues and connect with other meeting-goers at our Welcome Reception on Sunday evening. Then, on Monday evening, mingle amongst the Discovery Place Science Museum’s interactive exhibits at the ARIN 55 social event. During the meeting, visit the on-site ARIN Customer Service Desk, hosted by experienced resource analysts from our Registration Services Department, to get any questions you might have answered.
For in-person attendees, if you’re interested in learning more about ARIN’s Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) offerings and how they can help secure your resources, we encourage you to attend the RPKI Deployathon on Sunday, 27 April. ARIN experts will help guide your first Route Origin Authorization (ROA) and answer any questions you may have about RPKI.
Virtual attendees are encouraged to reach out to our Virtual Help Desk for support. ARIN staff will be just a click away during the first 90 minutes of each day and during our scheduled lunch breaks to help you get answers, troubleshoot any technical issues you experience, and ensure you have all the links and information you need for a successful meeting.
For hotel details, travel information, and more, visit the ARIN 55 website. ARIN’s reservation cut-off with the Hilton Charlotte Uptown is 1 April — book your room today at our negotiated rate!
Prepare to Participate
No matter how you plan to attend the meeting, save the date for the ARIN 55 Meeting Orientation on Tuesday, 22 April, from 2 to 3 PM ET. You’ll have the option of signing up for this virtual session during your registration. Whether it’s your first ARIN meeting or you’re a regular, we invite you to get a sneak peek at the policies up for discussion, learn more about what to expect during ARIN 55, and find out how to make the most of your meeting experience.
Meet the ARIN 55 Fellows
With ARIN 55 around the corner, that also means it’s time to introduce our next cohort of ARIN Fellows! We’re excited to welcome a new group of community members into this spring’s program. Sixteen Fellows will participate in three virtual sessions, held via Zoom in the weeks leading up to the meeting, before attending ARIN 55 either in person or virtually. The virtual sessions will provide Fellows the opportunity to get immersed into the work of ARIN through presentations, discussions, and Q&As with ARIN leadership so they can feel ready to actively participate in the upcoming meeting.
Read the blog post about this spring’s Fellowship Program to get to know the selected Fellows.
Make the Switch from FTP to HTTP
This is the final reminder that ARIN will retire the use of FTP on 31 March 2025.
ARIN has coordinated with the other Regional Internet Registries to ensure that the mirrors of the extended statistics data are available over HTTP and HTTPS. All ARIN data currently available via FTP will continue to be available over HTTP and HTTPS.
For more information on how your organization can prepare for the retirement of FTP at ARIN, read the recent post on the ARIN Blog explaining how to retrieve resources you may have previously accessed via FTP.
Review the New Number Resource Policy Manual (NRPM)
The ARIN Board of Trustees adopted the following policies at its meetings on 9 December and 14 January:
- ARIN-2022-12: Direct Assignment Language Update
- ARIN-2024-2: Whois Data Requirements Policy for Non-Personal Information
- ARIN-2024-9: Remove Outdated Carveout for Community Networks
- ARIN-2023-7: Clarification of NRPM Sections 4.5 and 6.11 Multiple Discrete Networks
These policies are now in effect; the latest version of the ARIN Number Resource Policy Manual (NRPM 2025.1), effective 4 March 2025, is available here. Interested in learning more about the ARIN Policy Development Process? Check out a video overview here!
Learn About the ICP-2 Review Process
In 2023, the Address Supporting Organization Address Council (ASO AC) began reviewing Internet Coordination Policy 2 (ICP-2), which was developed in 2001 to set criteria for the establishment of new Regional Internet Registries. Since the Internet landscape has changed significantly over the last two decades, a review is needed to ensure the criteria for an RIR remains relevant, accurate, and aligned with today’s Internet landscape.
The ASO AC/Number Resource Organization Number Council (NRO NC) designed an open and transparent consultation process to allow participation from across the global Internet community. The first four of eight steps in this process have been completed, most recently with the qualitative analysis, summary, and publication of the community responses received to the questionnaire on the proposed principles to update ICP-2 open from 8 October through 6 December 2024.
The community participation opportunity will be to provide comments on the updated document drafted with consideration for the questionnaire responses. Stay tuned for the announcement of this review period, which begins 14 April, and how you can provide feedback.
Read About ARIN’s Inclusivity Efforts
ARIN is committed to fostering inclusive and supportive behavior in all interactions. Recently on the blog, ARIN’s President and CEO shared an update on our expanding inclusivity initiatives aimed at creating safe and supportive environments for all members, customers, employees, and volunteers, as well as the broader global Internet community.
From creating welcoming spaces and ensuring accountability to championing flexibility and recognition and engaging a professional services firm specializing in leadership development, belonging, and culture, read about the deliberate steps we’re taking toward inclusion: Inclusivity at ARIN: Building a Supportive Organization and Community.
Streamline Routing Security with the New IRR Auto-Manager
With our latest software release on 13 January 2025, ARIN completed its work on the IRR Auto-Manager. We encourage ARIN Online users to take advantage of this new suite of tools to help manage the interconnection between Internet Routing Registry (IRR) and RPKI data.
Historically, resource holders created IRR route objects and RPKI Route Origin Authorizations (ROAs) separately, using different systems with different data requirements and understanding. Now, thanks to the IRR Auto-Manager, matching route objects can be created alongside ROAs and the two can be linked together and kept consistent with a much simpler process.
Learn more about these new features and opportunities in our recent blog post: Streamlining Routing Security with ARIN’s New IRR Auto-Manager.
Transition to TLS 1.2 and 1.3 Cryptographic Features
As of 4 February 2025, ARIN has deprecated outdated versions of Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) and is only using TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 protocols across all our services.
Those deprecated protocols include TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and SSLv3, which were previously supported for publicly available services such as ARIN.net mail, Whois-RESTful Web Service (Whois-RWS), Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP), ftp.arin.net, and Resource Public Key Infrastructure Repository Delta Protocol (RRDP).
In the future, ARIN may more regularly update cipher suite and algorithm support within our published supported protocols to align with requirements from internal and external audits, security certifications, and community feedback. Prepare for 2025 ARIN Elections Participation Opportunities: Review Your Membership Status
Voting in this year’s ARIN Elections may be months away, but the calendar of important participation opportunities and deadlines begins next month! Stay tuned to our Election HQ page for the 2025 ARIN Elections calendar.
All ARIN customer organizations with Internet number resources under an ARIN Agreement may choose to participate in ARIN governance by requesting General Membership. To help ARIN fulfill its mission, we rely on our General Members to participate in ARIN Elections for the ARIN Board of Trustees and Advisory Council and the Number Resource Organization Number Council (NRO NC). This involvement is both a chance to empower representation that aligns with your interests and to play an essential role in supporting the Internet number registry system and the Internet as a whole.
General members must participate in ARIN Elections to maintain their status (organizations that have not cast a ballot in any of the previous three ARIN Elections will be reclassified as Service Members and may reapply for General Member status at any time)*. To be eligible to vote, General Member organizations must have a valid designated Voting Contact and be in Good Standing (no outstanding/overdue fees) 45 days prior to the start of the elections.
Learn more about the importance of participating in ARIN governance and how to request General Membership in this blog post: ARIN Membership Explained: What It Means and Why It Matters.
*Organizations may submit a blank ballot. Your participation in the elections will still be recorded, and the organization will maintain General Member status.
Catch ARIN on the Road in Montreal
We’re heading north for ARIN on the Road’s next stop of 2025! If you’ll be in the Montreal, Québec, Canada, area on 17 June and want to experience our amazing community in person, learn more about ARIN, and explore what we can offer your organization, then don’t miss your chance when this special event comes to town. ARIN staff will be on site to answer questions about IPv6 deployment and IPv4 status, discuss RPKI and routing security, provide an intro to the Policy Development Process, and more. Need more reasons to attend? We shared five on the blog.
Stay tuned to our website for registration opening in May: ARIN on the Road.
Apply for a 2025 ARIN Community Grant (Soon)
Next month we will issue the call for applications for the 2025 ARIN Community Grant Program, which provides financial support for operational and research projects that improve the overall Internet industry and Internet user environment. The program has awarded nearly $300,000 since its start in 2019, supporting 20+ projects for Internet technical improvements, registry processes and technology, informational outreach, and research. We look forward to supporting more projects that benefit the ARIN community this year and encourage you to apply if you think your project seems like a good fit!
If you are thinking about applying, take a look at past grant recipients to get a sense of the types of projects we typically fund and carefully read through all the selection criteria to ensure your project can meet them. Plus, you can tune in to ARIN 55 on 29 April to hear project reports from the two 2024 Grant Program recipients, along with details about the application process from Project Manager Amanda Gauldin.
